Position title
Fractional Financial Controller (2 Days/Week) Media and Publishing Group, London
Description

Commitment: Two days per week, pattern flexible | Location: Central London offices, hybrid — typically one day on site | Rate: £450–£550 per day | Reports to: Managing Director

Accountancy Capital is recruiting a Fractional Financial Controller for an established, profitable media and publishing group in central London — a portfolio of print and digital titles, a growing events arm, and content licensing income across UK and international markets. The business runs on a capable bookkeeping team and a supportive external accountant; what it lacks is senior financial control, and the MD wants two days a week of exactly that: someone to own the numbers, sharpen the margins by title, and make the month-end tell the truth about a business with more moving parts than its size suggests. The client's identity is shared before any interview.

Why media finance is its own discipline

Publishing finance rewards a controller who understands its particular shapes: revenue recognised across subscriptions, advertising, events and licensing — each on its own timing; deferred income that dwarfs the debtor book; royalty and contributor accounting with contractual settlement cycles; commission structures on advertising sales; and title-level profitability where overhead allocation makes or breaks the analysis. An FC who has lived this — in publishing, media, events or an adjacent contract-revenue business — will find a familiar puzzle in excellent underlying shape. One who has not will spend their two days learning it at the client's expense, which is why relevant sector experience leads the person specification below.

Responsibilities

What the two days deliver

  • Ownership of the month-end close and a management pack the MD and title heads actually use — title-level P&L, events margin, licensing pipeline
  • Revenue recognition discipline across subscriptions, advertising, events and licensing — policies documented, deferred income reconciled monthly
  • Royalty and contributor accounting brought onto a reliable cycle, with the contractual terms mapped and settlements evidenced
  • Cash flow forecasting that respects the seasonality of events and renewals — a rolling 13-week view, refreshed weekly by exception
  • Supervision and development of the in-house bookkeeping team, and a productive rhythm with the external accountants at year-end
  • The commercial questions the MD wants answered properly: which titles genuinely make money, what events really cost, where the licensing upside sits
Qualifications

Who this suits

  • ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualified, with Financial Controller experience in media, publishing, events or another multi-stream revenue business — deferred income and rev-rec fluency is the gate
  • An established fractional or portfolio FC — or an experienced controller deliberately building toward one; this engagement anchors a portfolio week beautifully
  • Hands-on by temperament: comfortable in the ledger on Tuesday morning and presenting to the MD after lunch
  • London-based or an easy commute — the on-site day matters to this client, who runs a genuinely collaborative office

Also valued: Xero or NetSuite in a media context; events P&L experience; exposure to content licensing or rights income.

Job Benefits

The engagement

Two days per week at £450–£550 per day depending on experience, initial six-month term with every expectation of continuing — the need is structural, not project-shaped. Working pattern is flexible around a typical one-day-in, one-day-remote rhythm, and the IR35 position will be confirmed against the final arrangements. Start: as soon as the right person is available; the search moves quickly.
