Position title
Fractional Financial Controller – Musical Instrument Manufacturer
Description

South London (Hybrid) | 2–3 Days Per Week | Long-Established Family Business

A rare opportunity to join one of the UK's most respected names in musical instrument making. This long-established, family-owned manufacturer, based in South London, combines genuine craftsmanship with a loyal customer base at home and overseas — and is now looking for a Fractional Financial Controller to take ownership of its finances on a part-time basis, working 2–3 days per week with a mix of on-site and home working.

The Company

This is a business with heritage and a reputation earned over generations: skilled makers, products sold to musicians around the world, and a family leadership team who care deeply about doing things properly. What they need now is the same care applied to the numbers — a safe pair of hands to bring structure, visibility and confidence to the finance function as the business continues to thrive.

Responsibilities

The Role

Working closely with the owners, you will take charge of the company's finances on a fractional basis. Responsibilities include:

  • Monthly management accounts and a clear, owner-friendly reporting pack
  • Cash flow management and forecasting, including seasonal patterns in production and sales
  • Stock and inventory accounting — costing of materials, work-in-progress and finished instruments, and margin analysis by product line
  • Overseeing bookkeeping, payroll, VAT returns and day-to-day financial controls
  • Export administration and multi-currency sales, including overseas dealers and distributors
  • Year-end accounts, audit/accountant liaison and tax compliance support
  • Acting as a trusted adviser to the family leadership on pricing, investment and long-term planning
Qualifications

About You

  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA) with strong hands-on experience as a Financial Controller in an SME
  • Manufacturing experience essential — you understand stock, costing and work-in-progress, not just services P&Ls
  • Comfortable being the sole finance presence in a small, close-knit business: happy to roll your sleeves up one hour and advise the owners the next
  • Experienced with SME accounting systems (e.g. Xero, Sage) and confident improving processes without imposing corporate machinery on a craft business
  • The temperament for a family business — diplomatic, patient, trustworthy, and genuinely interested in what the company makes
Job Benefits

What's on Offer

  • A flexible fractional arrangement of 2–3 days per week, hybrid between the South London workshop and home
  • The chance to make a visible difference in a business with real character and a product to be proud of
  • A warm, values-driven working environment with direct access to decision-makers
  • Competitive day rate or pro-rata salary, depending on preferred arrangement
