Position title
Financial Controller - Tech - Remote
Description

Location: Remote, UK (registered office in London)
Salary: £85,000–£90,000 depending on experience
Type: Permanent preferred; interim considered
Hours: Full-time, or three days a week for the right person

This is a Financial Controller role in everything but the title. A private equity-backed online retail group is looking for a qualified accountant to take complete ownership of finance — not to inherit a working function, but to build one.

The business has grown quickly and finance has not yet caught up with it. There is transactional processing happening, there are numbers being produced, and there is nobody qualified sitting above either. What the group needs is someone who will own the close, put a control framework around it, and become the person the leadership team asks when they want to know what the numbers actually mean.

It suits a Finance Manager ready to make the step up to Financial Controller, or an existing FC who wants the autonomy of building something rather than maintaining it. If you are looking for a well-established function with documented processes and a team beneath you, this is not that role — and the people who will enjoy it most are the ones for whom that is the appeal.
The Role

You will be the senior finance presence in the business, working alongside a fractional CFO who is joining to cover investor reporting, forecasting and the board relationship. That split matters: the strategic layer is covered, which means your remit is the operational and technical one — the close, the balance sheet, the controls and the reporting that everything else depends on.

Expect the first three months to be about establishing what is actually true — reconciling what has not been reconciled, working out where the numbers come from, and putting a close timetable in place that people outside finance understand and follow. The interesting work starts after that.

Responsibilities

Own the month-end close end to end — timetable, review, sign-off and the accountability for the numbers being right
Take full ownership of the balance sheet: build the reconciliation index, clear the backlog, and review it monthly with evidence
Run day-to-day transactional finance — purchase and sales ledger, expenses and cash control — hands-on, at least initially
Manage weekly and monthly cash flow, which needs close attention given the pace the business is moving at
Design and implement the control framework: approval limits, segregation of duties, system access and the basics that were never formally put in place
Prepare the management accounts and the commentary that explains what moved and why, in language non-finance colleagues can act on
Work with the incoming fractional CFO on reporting, forecasting and investor updates
Act as the finance point of contact for the wider business and for the board
Document the process as you build it, so what you create outlasts you
Take on ad hoc finance projects as the group grows

Qualifications

Essential

Qualified accountant — ACA, ACCA or CIMA — or qualified by experience with a demonstrable track record of owning a close
Proven experience as a Finance Manager or Financial Controller, with genuine ownership rather than contribution
Comfortable working hands-on with transactional finance as well as at a control and reporting level. This role is both, and the balance shifts over time
Experience of building or improving process rather than operating an inherited one
Cloud accounting systems experience
Able to work autonomously in a remote-first business, and comfortable with the accountability that brings
A clear communicator who can present numbers to people who are not accountants
Available at short notice

Desirable

E-commerce, online retail or another fast-moving consumer business
Experience in a private equity-backed environment, or exposure to investor reporting
Multi-currency or multi-entity experience
Having previously been the first qualified finance hire in a growing business

Job Benefits

What Is on Offer

£85,000–£90,000 depending on experience, or an equivalent day rate for interim candidates
Remote-first working, with genuine flexibility on hours
Three days a week considered for the right person
The opportunity to build a finance function rather than inherit one — and to point at it afterwards
Direct exposure to private equity ownership, board reporting and a commercial environment that moves quickly
Working alongside an experienced fractional CFO rather than in isolation
