About Financial Controller roles
A Financial Controller owns the month-end close, the balance sheet, the controls and the statutory accounts, and usually manages the finance team that produces them. In smaller businesses the FC is often the most senior qualified accountant, working directly with the managing director or a part-time finance director; in larger groups the role sits beneath a Finance Director or CFO and focuses on accuracy, process and the audit.
Most FC roles ask for an ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualification, or equivalent experience, and evidence that you have owned a close rather than contributed to one. Our Financial Controller salary guide sets out current pay, and the Financial Controller job description shows what employers typically expect.
Interim, part-time and fractional work
Not every finance role is full-time and permanent. Interim assignments cover a departure, parental leave, a year-end or a systems project and often start within days; part-time and fractional roles give a growing business qualified support for one to three days a week. See our pages on interim finance roles and fractional finance roles.
How we work with finance candidates
When you apply for a role or register with us, a consultant reviews your CV against the brief and any other roles that might suit you. If there is a fit, we call you to talk through the role, the business and the package before anything is sent to the employer, and we never share your details without your agreement. We then prepare you for interview, pass on feedback and handle the offer conversation with you.
