Position title
Interim Group Financial Controller – Balance Sheet Remediation
Description

Location: Fully remote (UK)
Duration: Three weeks, available to start immediately
Commitment: Substantially full-time for the assignment
Rate: Competitive day rate, depending on experience
Type: Interim

Role

Accountancy Capital is recruiting an Interim Group Financial Controller for a multi-national professional services group. The assignment is a focused, three-week piece of balance sheet remediation.

The group’s previous Finance Director has left, and the balance sheet now needs to be brought back to a reliable position that the ledgers fully support. Some historical treatments need correcting, including prepayments that should have been expensed. Prior-year accounts need adjusting, and the current year’s statutory accounts are waiting on that work before they can be finalised.

The group already has a capable finance team to post the corrections. What it needs is a senior, technically strong accountant who will establish the correct treatment, turn findings into precise instructions, oversee their implementation and take material decisions to the board. A detailed issues log already exists, so you can start work on day one.

This is a hands-on assignment, not a strategic advisory role. It suits an interim who enjoys getting into the detail, driving issues to resolution and leaving behind a clean, well-documented balance sheet. The role reports directly to the Chair and is 100% remote.

Responsibilities
  • Review material balance sheet accounts and supporting reconciliations, prioritising errors, historical balances and suspense items.
  • Resolve bank and card, payroll control, accrual, prepayment, related-party loan and multi-currency/intercompany issues.
  • Establish the correct accounting treatment for historical errors, including prior-year adjustments and their corporation tax consequences.
  • Prepare precise correction instructions covering accounts, amounts, entities, periods, supporting evidence and verification checks.
  • Direct and review the finance team’s implementation of corrections, making sure nothing is duplicated.
  • Present material judgement, write-off and commercial matters to the board, with quantified options and a recommended course of action.
  • Support the finance team in getting the overdue statutory accounts into a position where they can be finalised.
  • Deliver an updated, ledger-supported group balance sheet and a full reconciliation pack.
  • Write practical month-end work instructions so the team can keep the balance sheet clean after the assignment ends.
  • Hand over a clearly quantified list of any outstanding exceptions, each with evidence, an owner and a resolution plan.
Qualifications
  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) with strong technical financial accounting skills.
  • A proven track record of personally delivering balance sheet remediation in multi-entity, multi-currency businesses.
  • Solid UK statutory accounts experience, including prior-year adjustments. Corporation tax knowledge is a strong advantage.
  • Confident working directly in QuickBooks and Excel.
  • Able to lead an existing finance team and turn findings into clear, executable instructions.
  • Comfortable presenting quantified options and recommendations to a board or chair.
  • Experience in recruitment, staffing or international professional services is an advantage.
  • Available immediately and able to commit substantially full-time for three weeks.
Job Benefits
  • Competitive day rate, depending on experience.
  • Fully remote, from anywhere in the UK, with no travel required.
  • Defined three-week assignment with a clear scope, a ready-made issues log and a supportive finance team.
  • Direct reporting line to the Chair, with real authority to resolve issues.
  • A high-impact assignment where your work leaves a lasting result: a clean, defensible group balance sheet.
  • Fast selection process, with interviews by video call and an immediate start.
