Position title
Management Accountant - Permanent, Interim and Part-Time
Description

Location: London and UK-wide — hybrid, remote and on-site
Salary: £50,000–£70,000 depending on scale, sector and systems
Interim rate: from £300 a day
Basis: Permanent, interim, fixed-term and part-time
Start: Ongoing — we recruit these roles continuously

Management Accountant is the role we place most often, and the one where a good appointment changes a business fastest. It is usually the first qualified or part-qualified finance hire a growing company makes above bookkeeping level, and it is the point at which numbers stop simply being recorded and start being explained.

The work sits at the centre of the monthly cycle: producing the management accounts, understanding why the result came out as it did, and telling the business something it can act on. The best Management Accountants are not the fastest producers — they are the ones who notice that a margin has drifted two points, investigate it unprompted, and tell somebody who can do something about it.

The roles we handle range from a first finance hire in a £5m business through to a Management Accountant inside an established team in a £100m group. Those are quite different jobs, and we are specific with candidates about which is which. If you are weighing the step up, our guide to Management Accountant versus Finance Manager sets out what separates them.

Responsibilities

Scope varies with the size of the finance function, but the core of the role is consistent:

  • Producing the monthly management accounts to a published timetable
  • Month-end journals — accruals, prepayments, depreciation, provisions and the judgement behind each
  • Variance analysis against budget and forecast, with commentary that explains cause rather than restating the number
  • Balance sheet reconciliations, with evidence rather than assertion
  • Budgeting and reforecasting support, including collecting and challenging departmental submissions
  • Cost analysis and margin reporting, and flagging drift before it becomes a problem
  • Supporting the annual audit — preparing schedules and answering queries from the client side
  • Cash flow reporting and short-term forecasting in smaller finance functions
  • Business partnering with budget holders who are not accountants, in language they can use
  • Improving the process as you go, and documenting it so the close does not depend on one person’s memory
  • Supervising or reviewing transactional finance work, where the structure allows it
Qualifications

Essential

  • Qualified or finalist — CIMA, ACCA or ACA — or qualified by experience with a clear record of owning a monthly close
  • Demonstrable experience producing management accounts end to end rather than contributing to them
  • Genuinely strong Excel — lookups, pivots and the ability to interrogate data rather than accept it
  • Comfortable explaining a variance to somebody outside finance without retreating into accounting language
  • Accuracy under a deadline, and the discipline to reconcile through the month rather than at the end of it
  • A cloud or ERP accounting system — Xero, Sage, NetSuite, Dynamics, SAP or similar

Desirable

  • Sector depth in SaaS, e-commerce, manufacturing, construction, professional services or hospitality
  • Costing experience — standard costing, variance analysis, stock and work in progress
  • Multi-entity or multi-currency reporting
  • Power BI, Tableau or similar reporting tools
  • Experience of a systems implementation or migration
  • Study support in progress, and a clear view of when you expect to qualify
Job Benefits
  • £50,000–£70,000 on permanent roles depending on scale, sector and systems
  • Interim and fixed-term day rates from £300
  • Part-time and reduced-hours roles where that is what you are looking for — we handle a steady volume of them and they are frequently unadvertised elsewhere
  • Study support negotiated properly. Where you are part-qualified we establish at offer stage what is funded and what happens on qualification
  • Honest positioning on scope. If a role is titled Management Accountant and is really transactional, we tell you
  • Direct access to a Chartered Accountant throughout, not a resourcer
