Position title
Group Financial Controller - Consolidation and Group Reporting
Description

The Role

Location: London and UK-wide, mostly hybrid
Salary: £90,000–£130,000 depending on group size and complexity
Interim rate: from £550 a day
Basis: Permanent, interim and fixed-term briefs
Start: Ongoing — we are building our panel ahead of the reporting season

We are expanding our panel of Group Financial Controllers. Consolidation is one of the few finance disciplines where demand reliably outstrips supply, and it is scarcest at exactly the moment every group needs it — between January and March, when December year-ends come through.

A Group Financial Controller is not simply a Financial Controller at a larger business. The role is defined by what sits above the individual entities: the consolidation itself, the intercompany position, foreign currency translation, and the technical judgements that decide how a group’s results are actually presented. In most groups it is also the role that owns the relationship with the auditor at consolidated level, and the one that has to explain a movement in group results to a board that has only seen the entity numbers.

We place these roles across listed groups, private equity-backed portfolio businesses, acquisitive owner-managed groups, and internationally trading businesses with subsidiaries in several jurisdictions. The technical demands differ considerably between them, and we brief candidates honestly on which they are walking into.

If you are weighing this against the Group Finance Director route, our guide to Group FC versus Group FD sets out where the two diverge.

Responsibilities

The remit varies by group, but the core is consistent. A Group Financial Controller is typically accountable for:

  • Owning the group consolidation end to end — the timetable, the eliminations, the review and the sign-off
  • Intercompany reconciliation and the discipline that keeps it from becoming a month-end excavation
  • Foreign currency translation, including the reserve movements and the questions the audit committee asks about them
  • Group statutory accounts under IFRS or FRS 102, and managing the group audit from the client side
  • Technical accounting judgements — acquisition accounting, goodwill and impairment, leases, revenue recognition, share-based payment
  • Setting and maintaining the group reporting timetable, and holding entity finance teams to it
  • The group reporting pack and the commentary that explains what moved at group level and why
  • Purchase price allocation and first-time consolidation following an acquisition
  • Maintaining the group accounting policy manual, so treatment is consistent across entities
  • Covenant reporting and the calculations behind it, where the group carries external debt
  • Managing and developing a group finance team, and working across entity finance leads who do not report to you
  • Supporting the CFO or Group FD on board reporting, investor reporting and transactions
Qualifications

Essential

  • Qualified accountant — ACA, ACCA or CIMA — typically with a practice background at senior level
  • Demonstrable ownership of a multi-entity consolidation, not merely contribution to one
  • Technical accounting depth under IFRS or FRS 102, with the judgement to know when to take advice and when not to
  • Experience of a group audit from the client side, including managing the auditor rather than reacting to them
  • Strong intercompany and foreign currency discipline
  • Able to influence entity finance teams who do not report to you — the single most underestimated requirement in the role
  • Comfortable explaining a technical treatment to a board in language they can act on

Desirable

  • Listed company reporting experience, including half-year and interim reporting
  • Consolidation systems — OneStream, Tagetik, Cognos, Oracle FCCS, Workday Adaptive or similar
  • Acquisition integration and first-time consolidation of a newly acquired entity
  • Private equity-backed group experience, including investor and covenant reporting
  • International groups with multiple functional currencies and reporting frameworks
  • FCA-regulated group experience, where prudential consolidation sits alongside the statutory one
  • A group carve-out, disposal or IPO readiness process
Job Benefits
  • £90,000–£130,000 on permanent roles, with bonus typically 10–25% at this level
  • Interim day rates from £550, rising for listed and international group work
  • Briefs across listed, private equity-backed and owner-managed groups rather than one segment
  • Clients briefed properly on scope before we approach anyone — we establish entity count, framework, systems and team structure so you know what you are walking into
  • A recruiter who understands consolidation. Every conversation is with a Chartered Accountant, not a generalist
  • Repeat interim work. Consolidation specialists who deliver well are placed again
