Management Accountant vs Finance Manager: Which to Hire

These two roles sit next to each other in almost every UK finance function, and businesses regularly hire the wrong one — usually because the titles are used loosely and the specifications look similar. The distinction is real and it is about ownership rather than task: a Management Accountant produces the numbers; a Finance Manager owns the function that produces them, including the people. Getting it wrong is expensive in both directions. This guide sets out what genuinely separates the roles, which to hire first, what each costs, and the signals that you have outgrown one and need the other.

The short answer

A Management Accountant owns the monthly cycle: the close, the management accounts, variance analysis, budgeting support and the commentary that explains performance. The orientation is production and analysis, and the accountability is for the numbers being right and useful.

A Finance Manager owns the finance function at operational level: the same monthly cycle plus the transactional team, cash flow, the control environment, the relationship with external accountants and auditors, and frequently the budget process itself. The orientation is ownership, and the accountability is for the function working.

Put simply: if the question is who produces the management accounts, that is a Management Accountant. If it is who is responsible for finance running properly, that is a Finance Manager.

The comparison

Dimension Management Accountant Finance Manager
Core accountability Accurate, useful monthly numbers The finance function operating
Team Usually none Typically 1–4 transactional staff
Owns the close Prepares it Owns and reviews it
Balance sheet Reconciles their areas Owns it end to end
External relationships Rarely Accountants, auditors, sometimes the bank
Budget cycle Supports Frequently owns
Typical reporting line To FM, FC or FD To FC, FD or MD
Typical qualification CIMA, ACCA — often part-qualified Qualified
London range £50k–£65k £56k–£78k

The bands overlap, which is part of the confusion. Both roles are typically held by accountants qualified through CIMA, ACCA or ICAEW. A senior Management Accountant in a complex business can earn more than a Finance Manager in a simple one, and the title tells you less than the scope. Benchmarks are in our Management Accountant salary guide and Finance Manager salary guide.

Which to hire first

The sequence depends on what already exists, and there are three common starting positions.

You have a bookkeeper and an external accountant. Hire a Finance Manager. What is missing is ownership — someone accountable for the close happening, the balance sheet being right and the transactional work being supervised. A Management Accountant in this position produces good numbers on top of an unmanaged foundation, and the foundation is the problem.

You have a Financial Controller or FD who is doing everything. Hire a Management Accountant. The gap is capacity, not ownership: your senior person is producing the pack when they should be reviewing it, and an MA beneath them releases exactly the right time at roughly two-thirds of the cost of another senior hire.

You have neither and the founder is doing it. Usually a Finance Manager, because you need one person who can both produce and own. In smaller businesses this is the first qualified hire, and our guide to hiring your first qualified accountant covers the decision.

The general rule: hire the Finance Manager when nobody owns finance; hire the Management Accountant when someone owns it but is drowning.

Signals you have outgrown a Management Accountant

Four signs the seat needs to become a Finance Manager role, or that one needs adding above it.

Nobody supervises the transactional team. An accounts assistant or bookkeeper working without qualified oversight produces errors that surface downstream, and the MA is usually too busy producing to review.

The balance sheet drifts between year-ends. Reconciliation happens in areas rather than as a discipline, and the audit becomes an excavation.

External relationships have no owner. Auditors, accountants and the bank are all being handled by the FD or the founder between other things.

Or the MA is doing the job already without the title. The most common and the easiest to fix — a capable Management Accountant who has taken on the team and the ownership is a Finance Manager, and recognising it is cheaper than replacing them when they leave for the title elsewhere. Our guide to the MA to Finance Manager step covers what the transition involves.

Signals you have outgrown a Finance Manager

The mirror question, and worth asking before hiring a second one. If the function now needs statutory accounts prepared in-house, an audit run from the client side, a group consolidation, or genuine control design — that is a Financial Controller rather than a bigger Finance Manager. Our guide to when a Finance Manager is no longer enough works through the signals, and FC versus Finance Manager the comparison.

Specifying each properly

Three things that make the difference in an advert.

Be honest about the team. A Finance Manager role with no direct reports is a Management Accountant role with a better title, and experienced candidates spot it in the first interview. If the team is coming later, say so.

State who owns the close. The single clearest signal of which role you are advertising.

And describe the state of play. “The close currently takes fourteen days and the balance sheet has not been reconciled since the audit” attracts the people who find that interesting and filters those who want a tidy inheritance. Our Management Accountant and Finance Manager job description templates cover both.

Interviewing for the difference

One question distinguishes them better than any other: walk me through your last month-end, day by day. A Management Accountant describes what they produced and when. A Finance Manager describes the timetable, who was late, what they did about it, and what they changed afterwards. Ask it of both, and the answers sort themselves.

Beyond that, for Finance Manager candidates test people management directly — Acas guidance on managing performance is a reasonable reference point for what good looks like — — someone developed, someone whose performance was addressed — and test balance sheet ownership with evidence. Our Management Accountant and Finance Manager interview guides cover the full sequences.

A Note from Our Founder — Adrian Lawrence FCA

The hiring error I see most often at this level is a business with a bookkeeper and an external accountant deciding it needs a Management Accountant, because what it notices is that the management accounts are late. The management accounts are late because nobody owns finance — and hiring someone to produce them faster leaves that unchanged. My test is simple: if the problem is that the numbers are not produced well enough, hire a Management Accountant. If the problem is that nobody is accountable for finance working, hire a Finance Manager. And if you already have a Management Accountant who has quietly taken on the team and the ownership, give them the title before somebody else does.
