What Is a Finance Manager?

A Finance Manager is a qualified finance professional responsible for the operational management of the finance function — typically including ownership of the month-end close process, the production or oversight of management accounts, line management of the finance team and the primary interface with the Financial Controller or Finance Director above them. The Finance Manager role is the most common first management appointment in UK in-house finance for ACA, ACCA and CIMA-qualified professionals, typically arising at two to five years of post-qualification experience.

This guide covers what a Finance Manager does, how the role differs from the Financial Controller above them and the Management Accountant below them, what qualifications Finance Managers hold, what they earn in 2026 and the career path from Finance Manager to Financial Controller. See Finance Manager Recruitment for the hiring service and Finance Manager Job Description for the complete JD template.

What Does a Finance Manager Do?

Month-end close management. The Finance Manager owns the month-end close process — the timetable, the journals, the reconciliations and the delivery of the management accounts pack within the agreed number of working days. This is the most fundamental distinction between the Finance Manager and the Management Accountant who reports to them: the MA contributes to the close, the FM owns it. Owning the close means being accountable when the accounts are late, making the decisions when something goes wrong during the close, and holding the team to the close schedule.

Management accounts production and oversight. The FM produces or oversees the production of the monthly management accounts pack, including the P&L with prior-year and budget comparatives, the balance sheet and the cash flow statement. At smaller businesses the FM prepares significant sections of the management accounts themselves; at larger businesses they review and challenge the work produced by the Management Accountants below them and add the commercial commentary that the raw numbers require.

Finance team management. The Finance Manager manages the finance team below them — typically one or two Management Accountants and one or more Accounts Assistants. This includes setting objectives, conducting regular one-to-ones, managing performance issues directly and providing the development support that prepares the most capable team members for their next career step.

Budget and forecast. The Finance Manager leads or significantly contributes to the annual budget process — working with operational managers to build the budget that reflects the commercial plan, maintaining the rolling reforecast that reflects the most current trading view and producing the budget-versus-actual variance analysis that explains the financial performance of the period.

Banking and transactional finance oversight. At smaller businesses where there is no dedicated purchase ledger or treasury function, the Finance Manager oversees the payment run approval process, maintains the banking relationship at an operational level (not the senior banking relationship, which is typically owned by the FD or CEO) and ensures that cash flow is managed within the parameters set by the FD.

Statutory accounting support. Where the Financial Controller above the FM is the primary owner of the year-end audit and the statutory accounts, the FM typically supports the audit by preparing specific audit working papers, co-ordinating the provision of information to the auditors and ensuring the audit timeline is maintained. At smaller businesses where there is no FC above the FM, the FM may take primary responsibility for the statutory accounts with support from an external accountant.

Finance Manager vs Financial Controller: The Critical Distinction

Dimension Finance Manager Financial Controller
Month-end close Owns the close process Owns and has designed the close process
Management accounts Produces or oversees production Reviews, signs off, presents to board
Year-end audit Supports; prepares working papers Manages independently, end-to-end
Statutory accounts Supports or manages with external accountant Prepares or oversees independently
Financial controls Maintains controls framework Designs and owns the controls framework
Board presentation Rarely Monthly or quarterly
Finance team Manages MA and Accounts Assistants Manages FM, MA and full finance team
London salary 2026 £55k–£92k £65k–£135k

The defining test: if the most senior finance professional is expected to independently manage the year-end audit — prepare the audit file, manage the auditor relationship throughout fieldwork, respond to the management letter without external accountant involvement — the role is FC scope. See FC vs Finance Manager guide and What Is a Financial Controller? for the full comparison.

Finance Manager vs Management Accountant

Dimension Finance Manager Management Accountant
Close ownership Owns the close process and timetable Contributes to sections of the close
Management accounts Oversees quality; adds commentary Prepares specific sections
Team management Manages MA and Accounts Assistants No line management
Business reporting Presents to FD or CEO where required Rarely presents independently
Audit involvement Manages audit file preparation Supports with specific schedules
London salary 2026 £55k–£92k £50k–£82k

Finance Manager Qualifications

The Finance Manager role at £55,000 and above is a qualified role. ACA, ACCA and CIMA qualifications are all well-represented in the Finance Manager market, with CIMA most common at commercial and manufacturing businesses where the management accounting and close process dimensions of the role are primary, and ACA or ACCA more common at financial services and professional services businesses where the statutory accounting and audit management depth of those qualifications adds value. See ACA vs ACCA vs CIMA for the qualification comparison.

Finance Manager Career Path

The Finance Manager role sits between the Management Accountant and the Financial Controller in the standard qualified finance career progression. The typical timeline: Management Accountant (newly qualified to three years PQE) → Senior Management Accountant or Finance Manager (three to six years PQE) → Financial Controller (five to nine years PQE).

The capability gap most frequently encountered at the FM-to-FC transition is independent audit management experience. Many Finance Managers have supported year-end audits — prepared specific working papers, co-ordinated information requests — without having managed one independently from opening meeting to management letter response. This gap is the most consistent reason why experienced FMs are not shortlisted for FC roles. See From Finance Manager to Financial Controller for the specific preparation guide and From Management Accountant to Finance Manager for the previous career transition.

A Note from Our Founder — Adrian Lawrence FCA

The Finance Manager appointment is the one where I most frequently see the scope-versus-salary mismatch that causes searches to stall. The business that needs a Finance Manager — close ownership, team management, management accounts production, budget process leadership — and prices it at £48,000 in London will not find a qualified FM at that price. The business that needs an FC — independent audit management, statutory accounts, financial controls ownership — and prices it at FM level will not find an FC who will stay. The scope definition conversation that happens before the brief is finalised is the most valuable twenty minutes in the search process. Call 0204 553 8893 before the brief goes to market.

The Finance Manager in Different Business Contexts

Owner-managed businesses (£3m–£20m). The Finance Manager at a smaller owner-managed business is often the most senior finance professional in the building. They own the close, manage a bookkeeper or accounts assistant, handle the external accountant relationship for the year-end and are the primary financial contact for the bank. At this level, the Finance Manager effectively performs FC-lite scope — which means they need to be priced at the FM/FC overlap (£55,000–£72,000 in London) rather than at the pure FM rate.

PE-backed businesses. The Finance Manager at a PE-backed business works in the most demanding FM environment — fast close timetable (five to six working days), investor KPI reporting, a more exacting management accounts format and a Financial Controller or Finance Director above them whose own performance is under investor scrutiny. PE-backed FM roles pay a 10–20% premium over owner-managed equivalents, and Accountancy Capital consistently finds that candidates with previous PE-backed experience are in highest demand for PE-backed FM searches.

Corporate group businesses. The Finance Manager in a corporate group environment typically owns the close and management accounts for a specific division, region or entity within a larger group, reporting to a Group Financial Controller or Group FD. The group FM role offers structured development and clear career progression within a finance team hierarchy that smaller businesses cannot provide.

When to Hire a Finance Manager vs a Financial Controller

The decision between hiring a Finance Manager and a Financial Controller depends entirely on the scope of the role rather than the title preference of the employer. Use this test: does the person in the role need to independently manage the year-end audit without external accountant involvement? If yes: Financial Controller. If no: Finance Manager. This test determines the qualification depth required, the post-qualification experience needed and the salary. Getting this wrong in either direction creates a structural problem — either an overpaid FM performing FC work at FM accountability, or an underpaid FC performing FC work at FM salary. See the FC vs Finance Manager guide and Hiring Your First Qualified Accountant for the full decision framework.
