Position title
Interim Group Financial Controller
Description

Location: London (hybrid). Strong US-based candidates with substantial overlap with UK working hours will also be considered.
Contract: Interim, immediate start, initially full-time
Rate: Competitive day rate, dependent on experience
Sector: Financial technology / software

Role

Accountancy Capital is supporting an established, international financial technology business in the appointment of an Interim Group Financial Controller. The group is US-headquartered, with subsidiaries in the UK and Asia-Pacific, around 70 employees, and a Microsoft Dynamics finance system.

After the departure of the previous Financial Controller, the business needs an experienced, hands-on finance leader. The priorities are to restore confidence in the group's financial reporting, strengthen the month-end close, and produce reliable, decision-ready forecasts.

This is a genuine controllership assignment, not an advisory-only or fractional CFO role. The successful candidate will personally carry out the validation and remediation of the financial records. They will report directly to the CEO, who is based in London, and work closely with a capable junior accountant who handles day-to-day accounting.

The role suits an interim who enjoys taking ownership of an imperfect position, getting into the detail, and leaving behind a stable, well-documented finance function. Alongside the technical work, you will assess and develop the junior accountant and help the CEO decide the right permanent finance leadership structure.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a thorough review and validation of the group's financial records, identifying errors, gaps and unreconciled balances, and personally carrying out the remediation work.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts across all entities, including bank, debtors, creditors, accruals, prepayments, deferred income and intercompany balances.
  • Design, document and embed a reliable, timely month-end close process with clear timetables, checklists and review controls.
  • Prepare accurate monthly management accounts and group consolidations across the US, UK and Asia-Pacific entities, including intercompany eliminations and multi-currency translation.
  • Review revenue recognition policies and practices for software licence, subscription and services revenue, and ensure they are applied consistently.
  • Build integrated forecasts for the current and following financial year, linking P&L, balance sheet and cash flow, and give the CEO clear commentary to support decisions.
  • Support the year-end process and act as the main finance contact for external auditors and tax advisers across jurisdictions.
  • Improve the use of Microsoft Dynamics, including chart of accounts structure, reporting and workflow, to strengthen controls and reduce manual work.
  • Assess the junior accountant's capability, then coach and develop them and delegate appropriate responsibilities.
  • Advise the CEO on the right permanent finance structure and support the transition to a permanent appointment if required.
  • Identify control weaknesses and put in place proportionate financial controls suited to the size of the business.
Qualifications
  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or US CPA), with significant post-qualification experience at Financial Controller or Group Financial Controller level.
  • A proven interim track record, ideally including at least one assignment taking over and remediating a finance function after an unplanned departure.
  • Strong multi-entity consolidation experience, including intercompany accounting, transfer pricing awareness and foreign currency translation.
  • Experience in a US-parented group, with working knowledge of US GAAP reporting alongside UK statutory requirements (FRS 102). Exposure to Australian reporting is an advantage.
  • Experience in software, SaaS, fintech or technology businesses, with a sound understanding of revenue recognition for licence, subscription and services contracts.
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Dynamics (Business Central, GP or F&O) is highly desirable. Strong ERP skills are essential in any case.
  • Advanced forecasting and financial modelling skills, with the ability to build integrated three-statement forecasts.
  • A genuinely hands-on approach: comfortable doing reconciliations and journals yourself rather than directing a large team.
  • Confident communicator, able to work directly with a founder-CEO and present clear, candid views on the state of the numbers.
  • Experience developing junior team members and advising on finance team structure.
  • US-based candidates must be able to maintain substantial overlap with London working hours.
Job Benefits
  • Direct reporting line to the CEO, with real influence over the future shape of the finance function.
  • A high-impact assignment where your work will be visible and valued.
  • Exposure to an international group spanning the US, UK and Asia-Pacific.
  • Competitive interim day rate, with scope for extension.
  • Hybrid working from London, with flexibility for the right candidate.
  • The chance to shape the permanent finance leadership structure, which may interest candidates open to longer-term involvement.
  • An immediate start, with a clear brief and an engaged, decision-making client.
