Part-Time Senior Management Accountant Build a Finance Function From Scratch (1 Day/Week, Construction Sector)
Description

Part-Time Senior Management Accountant — Build a Finance Function From Scratch (1 Day/Week, Construction Sector)

Location: Remote / Flexible
Day rate: £425–£475/day
Commitment: 1 day/week initially, with scope to grow over time
Contract type: Part-time, ongoing

About the role

Most Senior Management Accountant roles ask you to operate inside a finance function someone else has already built. This one asks you to build it.

Our client is an early-stage business bringing AI-assisted financial and commercial intelligence to construction subcontractors — specifically Tier 2 firms operating beneath Tier 1 main contractors, where CIS, retentions and contract-by-contract cost tracking are the daily reality of the job, not a specialist afterthought bolted on at year-end. As the company's first technical finance hire, you'll work one-to-one with the founder on two parallel fronts: setting up robust internal reporting and controls for the business itself, and supporting the monthly close for its first live client.

This is a role for someone who wants ownership from day one — of the numbers, the process, and increasingly, the shape of the finance function as it grows.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities

  • Take full ownership of the monthly management accounts process, from raw transactional data through to finished, review-ready accounts
  • Prepare accruals, prepayments, balance sheet reconciliations and clear variance commentary for founder-level review
  • Apply construction-sector accounting principles accurately — CIS treatment, retention tracking, WIP valuation and cost-value reconciliation (CVR)
  • Partner with the founder to establish internal financial controls, reporting templates and a chart of accounts fit for a growing, multi-client business
  • Contribute financial and commercial input into tender review processes where relevant
  • Proactively suggest improvements to reporting efficiency and process design as the finance function scales
Qualifications

Essential qualifications and experience

  • ACCA or CIMA qualified (fully qualified strongly preferred, given the level of autonomy in this role)
  • Solid, hands-on construction accounting background — this is not a generalist role adapted for construction, it requires genuine sector fluency
  • Practical experience of CIS deductions and reporting obligations
  • Confident handling contract retentions — calculation, tracking and reconciliation
  • Comfortable working with cost-value reconciliation (CVR) and work-in-progress (WIP) on live, active contracts
  • A track record of running a monthly close independently, end-to-end, rather than as part of a larger team under close supervision
  • Strong Excel and accounting-software proficiency (Sage, Xero or construction-specific platforms such as COINS or Sage Construction)

Desirable

  • Previous experience working fractionally or across multiple clients/portfolios
  • Specific exposure to Tier 2 subcontractor commercial dynamics, rather than main-contractor or developer-side finance
  • Curiosity about, or prior exposure to, AI-assisted finance tools and process automation
  • Experience reviewing or costing tender submissions

Why this role is different

The position is explicitly designed to grow in both days and scope as the client base expands — this is a genuine ground-floor opportunity in a construction-sector fintech, with a direct line of sight to a larger, more senior role for the right candidate. You'll be shaping how the finance function works, not just operating within constraints someone else set.
