Position title
Fractional Financial Controller - Portfolio Roles, UK
Description

Description

Location: UK-wide — remote, hybrid and on-site arrangements
Rate: £400–£600 per day depending on sector and complexity
Basis: Self-employed, one to three days a week per client
Start: Ongoing — we are building a panel

We are expanding our panel of fractional Financial Controllers. Demand from UK businesses between roughly £3m and £25m turnover has grown steadily, and the constraint is no longer client appetite — it is finding experienced Financial Controllers who want to work this way and are good at it.

This is not interim cover. Fractional arrangements are part-week and ongoing, typically one to three days a week, and the good ones run for years. Most of our clients are businesses that have outgrown a bookkeeper and an external accountant but cannot justify a full-time FC at around £108,000 fully loaded. What they need is somebody accountable for the numbers being right — and most of that is review rather than production, which is why it compresses into part of a week.

We are interested in hearing from people already working fractionally, and equally from experienced Financial Controllers considering the move for the first time. If it is the latter, we will be straightforward with you about what the work is actually like and what it pays.

Responsibilities

What We Look For

Essential

  • Qualified accountant — ACA, ACCA or CIMA — or qualified by experience with a clear record of owning a close
  • Able to arrive and be useful inside a fortnight. Interim clients are not paying for a settling-in period
  • Comfortable inheriting a mess, and genuinely interested in the ones that are broken
  • Available at short notice, or with a clear picture of when you are next free
  • Willing to document what you do, so the function does not degrade when you leave

Particularly useful

  • Group consolidation under IFRS or FRS 102, and multi-entity or multi-currency experience
  • Having taken a business through a first audit
  • Systems experience — NetSuite, Dynamics, Sage Intacct, Xero, Workday — especially migrations
  • FP&A and budget-season capability, which peaks between September and December
  • FCA-regulated experience — client money, safeguarding or regulatory reporting. Scarce, and it carries a rate premium
  • Umbrella or limited company arrangements already in place, with a view on IR35 status

Job Benefits

What We Offer

  • £350–£600 a day depending on level, sector and the technical demands of the brief
  • Briefs scoped properly — we establish what is actually broken before you arrive, so the scope reflects reality
  • Fast turnaround. Most interim briefs go from client call to shortlist in 48–72 hours, so you hear quickly either way
  • Honest positioning on IR35 status and engagement basis before you commit
  • Repeat work. Clients who have used an interim well tend to come back, and we place the same people repeatedly
