An interim Financial Accountant provides qualified statutory accounting and audit management cover for businesses that need that capability now. The brief usually arrives at one of a few predictable moments: the October to January audit season for December year-ends, a Financial Accountant’s parental leave, a resignation close to the year-end, a technical accounting project that needs FRS 102 or IFRS depth the current team does not have, or a balance sheet that has drifted and needs cleaning up before the auditors arrive.
Accountancy Capital places interim Financial Accountants across the UK, from owner-managed businesses and private equity-backed groups to FCA-regulated firms. We respond the same working day, agree the scope and day rate with you, and introduce ACA or ACCA-qualified interims who are available to start, typically within days of a complete brief. This page explains when an interim FA is the right answer, what the assignment involves, what it costs and how to brief it well. If you need cover now, call 0204 553 8893.
The interim FA is a different hire from the interim Management Accountant. The interim Management Accountant owns the month-end close and the management accounts; the interim Financial Accountant owns the statutory accounts, the audit file and the technical accounting judgements the year-end requires. An interim MA is rarely the right person to run an audit file, and an interim FA without close experience is not the right person to own a monthly reporting timetable. Our interim accountancy recruitment hub covers the full range of interim finance roles.
When Do You Need an Interim Financial Accountant?
Most interim FA briefs fall into one of five situations. Naming the situation clearly in the brief is the biggest single factor in getting the right person quickly, because each needs a slightly different profile.
Audit season cover
October to January is when most UK businesses with December year-ends prepare their audit files, manage fieldwork and finalise their statutory accounts. Where the Financial Accountant is the primary owner of the audit file, a departure or leave in this window creates an immediate gap. The interim needs the FRS 102 or IFRS depth to pick up a file part-way through preparation, understand the treatments already agreed with the auditors and carry the process through to signed accounts. Our guide to managing the year-end audit relationship sets out what a good audit process looks like from the client side.
Year-end and statutory accounts
Some businesses do not need audit management so much as a qualified pair of hands to prepare the year-end: closing the balance sheet, preparing the statutory accounts and notes, calculating the tax provisions with the advisers and getting the accounts filed on time. Private companies have nine months from the year-end to file accounts with Companies House, and late filing penalties apply automatically. Our year-end statutory accounts timetable and guide to preparing statutory accounts show where an interim usually adds most.
Parental leave
A Financial Accountant going on maternity or shared parental leave during or approaching the year-end needs a qualified interim who can take over the audit file and manage the statutory accounts process to completion. Ideally the search is briefed eight to ten weeks before the leave date, so there is time for a proper handover of the working papers, the auditor relationship and the accounting treatments in progress. Our guide to interim finance handovers includes a handover checklist.
Backlog and balance sheet clean-up
A common brief we see is the business whose balance sheet has not been properly reconciled for months: suspense accounts growing, intercompany balances that do not agree, accruals and prepayments rolled forward without review, fixed asset registers out of step with the ledger. An interim FA on a defined clean-up assignment works through the reconciliations, clears the backlog and leaves the balance sheet in a state the auditors, the bank and the permanent team can rely on. These assignments often run for six to twelve weeks and are easier to scope when the brief lists the balances known to be problematic.
Technical accounting projects and group consolidation
FRS 102 transition work, IFRS 16 lease accounting, revenue recognition under IFRS 15, foreign currency restatement and deferred tax recalculation all benefit from an interim with direct experience of the standard. This is a particularly common brief after a first private equity acquisition, where the new ownership structure brings IFRS or enhanced reporting the existing team has not previously managed. Similarly, the Group Financial Accountant who prepares the consolidation, eliminating intercompany transactions, managing goodwill and producing the group statutory accounts, needs like-for-like cover when absent. The Financial Reporting Council publishes the UK GAAP standards, including FRS 102, that most of these projects work to.
What an Interim Financial Accountant Does
The exact scope depends on the situation, but a typical assignment covers some or all of the following:
- Preparing the year-end audit file, lead schedules and supporting reconciliations to the auditors’ request list.
- Acting as the day-to-day contact for the audit team during planning, fieldwork and completion.
- Drafting the statutory accounts and disclosure notes under FRS 102, FRS 101 or IFRS.
- Balance sheet reconciliations, accruals, prepayments, fixed assets and intercompany balances.
- Working with tax advisers on the corporation tax and deferred tax provisions.
- Technical accounting papers on specific judgements, written for management and the auditors.
- Group consolidation and the group statutory accounts, where the role is a group FA brief.

Interim Financial Accountant Day Rates
Day rates depend on qualification, post-qualification experience, the reporting framework and how much of the audit the interim will own. The figures below are typical ranges from our interim FA placements and are the interim’s own day rate.
| Profile | London | South East | Midlands and North |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interim FA, ACA/ACCA, 1–3 years PQE | £225–£340/day | £191–£289/day | £169–£255/day |
| Interim FA, 3–6 years PQE, FRS 102 | £300–£420/day | £255–£357/day | £225–£315/day |
| Interim Group FA / IFRS | £360–£490/day | £306–£417/day | £270–£368/day |
| Interim FC scope (full statutory and audit ownership) | £400–£520/day | £350–£445/day | £310–£395/day |
Our interim finance rate card shows a single headline band of around £275–£400 a day in London for an interim Financial Accountant. The table above shows how that range spreads by experience, from newly qualified cover at the lower end to group and IFRS specialists at the top.
Rates typically rise during the October to January peak, when demand for qualified interim FAs with FRS 102 or IFRS audit experience exceeds supply. Briefing audit season cover before September tends to produce a wider choice at better rates. Where the scope extends to running the whole finance function, the requirement is really an interim Financial Controller, and experienced or group interim FCs sit above the band shown. For more detail see our interim Financial Accountant day rates guide and the full interim finance day rates UK rate card. Our fee is agreed in writing before any introduction is made, so the total cost is clear from the start.
How the interim is engaged also affects cost. Most interim FAs work through a limited company or an umbrella company, and the off-payroll working rules decide who is responsible for the employment status assessment; HMRC’s guidance on off-payroll working (IR35) explains the rules, and our comparison of umbrella, PSC and fixed-term interim arrangements sets out the practical differences.

Audit Season Cover: Brief Early for October Availability
The October to January audit season creates the highest demand for qualified interim FAs, and the pool of available ACA or ACCA-qualified professionals with recent FRS 102 or IFRS audit file experience is under pressure from many businesses at once. We recommend briefing audit season cover by August at the latest, or six to eight weeks before the leave date or planned start of audit preparation. That gives access to the full available pool rather than whoever remains in September and October once the strongest interims have committed elsewhere.
A good brief does not need to be long. It should tell us the year-end date, the reporting framework, the audit firm and timetable, the state of the balance sheet, the systems in use and what the interim will be doing in the first two weeks. Our guide on how to brief an interim finance search lists the questions we will ask on the first call.
Qualification Requirements
For statutory accounting and audit management scope, we place ACA or ACCA-qualified interim Financial Accountants. At this level the qualification is a requirement rather than a preference: an interim who independently manages an audit file, prepares statutory accounts under FRS 102 or IFRS and makes accounting judgements needs the technical depth that qualification provides. We check membership status through the ICAEW and ACCA member directories before submitting any interim FA candidate. Part-qualified professionals are a good fit for management accounting interim work at lower day rates, but not for owning an audit file.
Group FA and Technical Accounting Interims
For more specialist requirements, such as group consolidation under IFRS, first-time adoption of IFRS 16 or IFRS 15, complex revenue recognition, foreign currency restatement or deferred tax recalculation, we place interim FAs with direct technical project experience. These engagements are usually project-based rather than ongoing cover, typically three to six months to complete a defined deliverable, and need more technical depth than a standard interim FA brief. Day rates for technical accounting specialists in London are typically £380–£520 per day, depending on the standard and the complexity of the group.
Running Interim and Permanent Searches Together
Where the interim brief comes from a permanent departure, we recommend briefing the interim and the permanent search on the same day. A permanent Financial Accountant search typically takes eight to twelve weeks from brief to start once notice periods are included, with London salaries typically in the £50,000–£72,000 range depending on experience; our Financial Accountant salary guide has the detail. For permanent hires we typically present a shortlist within one to two weeks. The interim covers the statutory accounting and audit work in the meantime, so the year-end does not slip while the permanent search runs properly rather than in a hurry. Our Financial Accountant recruitment page covers the permanent service.
Converting an interim to permanent
Some interim Financial Accountants are offered permanent roles by the business they are working in, because the engagement has shown a fit the employer does not want to lose. Where you are open to that, we agree the conversion terms in writing before the engagement begins, so there is a clear path to a permanent offer without an unexpected fee conversation at the end.
Frequently Asked Questions
How quickly can an interim Financial Accountant start?
We respond the same working day and typically present a shortlist within days of a complete brief. Many interim FAs are available at short notice; during the October to January peak, availability is tighter, which is why early briefing helps.
What does an interim Financial Accountant cost?
Typical London day rates run from £225–£340 for an interim FA with one to three years’ PQE to £360–£490 for a group or IFRS specialist, with lower rates in the regions. Technical accounting specialists are typically £380–£520 per day in London.
Is an interim FA or an interim Financial Controller the right hire?
If the need is the audit file, the statutory accounts or a technical project, an interim FA is usually right. If the interim will also run the close, manage the team and report to the board, the scope is an interim FC. Our guide to interim FC cover for audit preparation covers the larger brief.
How long do interim FA assignments last?
Audit season cover usually runs for three to four months; parental leave cover for six to twelve months; backlog clean-ups for six to twelve weeks; technical projects for three to six months.
