FP&A Analyst Job Description + 2026 Salary Benchmarks

The FP&A Analyst is the seat where most commercial finance careers begin, and it is also the role employers most often mis-scope. Written well, it attracts numerate, curious people who become the FP&A Managers and business partners of the next five years. Written as a reporting job with a modelling label, it attracts people who leave within eighteen months. This page provides an FP&A Analyst job description you can copy and adapt, 2026 UK salary benchmarks, and guidance on specifying and testing the role.

Before you write: three decisions

Analysis or production? The defining question at this level. A role built around refreshing the pack, updating the forecast file and maintaining templates is production — useful, necessary, and not what most candidates think they are applying for. A role built around investigating why the numbers moved and modelling what happens next is analysis. Most analyst roles are both; state the split honestly, because a mismatch here is the commonest reason these appointments turn over.

Who they support and how directly. An analyst working entirely through the FP&A Manager has a different job from one who partners a commercial area directly. The second develops faster and is more attractive to good candidates; the first is easier to manage.

Qualified, studying or neither? This is the one finance discipline where strong non-qualified analysts genuinely compete — modelling and commercial instinct can outweigh the letters, particularly in technology businesses. Decide whether study support is offered, because it is a significant part of the proposition at this level.

The job description template

Adapt the text below; square brackets mark what to change.

Job title: FP&A Analyst
Reports to: [FP&A Manager / Head of FP&A / Finance Director]
Location: [location and hybrid pattern]
Salary: [range] plus [bonus, study support, pension, benefits]

Purpose of the role. To support financial planning and analysis for [business]: maintaining the forecast and planning models, producing the analysis that explains performance, and supporting the budget cycle and the decisions the leadership team makes.

Key responsibilities. Maintain and update the financial model and forecast, ensuring assumptions are documented and changes are traceable. Produce monthly analysis explaining performance against budget and forecast — by cause rather than by line. Prepare the forward-looking sections of the management reporting pack and the supporting commentary. Support the annual budget cycle: templates, consolidation, iteration and the challenge process with budget holders. Build ad-hoc analysis and models for specific decisions — pricing, investment, headcount, customer or product profitability. Maintain and improve the data extracts and reporting that the planning process depends on. [Partner with [named commercial area] on their forecast and performance.] [Add as relevant: cash flow forecasting, headcount and payroll modelling, investor or lender reporting support, KPI reporting.]

Person specification — essential. [Part-qualified / qualified / studying towards CIMA, ACCA or ACA] or equivalent analytical experience. Strong Excel — able to build a model others can use and audit, not just maintain one. Able to work with source data directly: extract, reconcile and interrogate rather than waiting for reports. Commercially curious — interested in why the numbers moved, not only that they did. Able to present analysis clearly to people who are not accountants.

Person specification — desirable. Experience in [sector]. Planning tool exposure [Anaplan, Pigment, Adaptive] or BI tooling [Power BI, Tableau]. SQL or equivalent data capability. Business partnering exposure.

Success in the first twelve months. [Adapt:] The forecast is maintained accurately and updated to the agreed cycle. Monthly analysis explains variances by cause and is used by the leadership team. The budget process runs smoothly with templates and consolidation handled without escalation. At least [two] pieces of ad-hoc analysis have visibly informed a decision. The model is documented well enough that someone else could run it.

FP&A Analyst salary benchmarks 2026

Level London Regional UK
FP&A Analyst (graduate / early) £35k–£45k £30k–£40k
FP&A Analyst (part-qualified) £45k–£55k £38k–£48k
FP&A Analyst (qualified) £52k–£62k £45k–£54k
Senior FP&A Analyst £60k–£75k £52k–£65k
FP&A Manager (next step) £65k–£85k £56k–£72k
Interim (day rate) £300–£425 £275–£375

Bonuses of 5–15% are typical, and study support is close to standard for part-qualified analysts — it is a genuine differentiator in a competitive band. Two premiums recur: strong data capability, particularly SQL or advanced BI, prices above the range at every level; and investor-backed or transaction environments pay more for the same seniority. Full benchmarks are in our FP&A Manager salary guide and the wider salary guides.

Common specification mistakes

Advertising analysis, describing maintenance. The most frequent error at this level. If eighty per cent of the role is refreshing files, say so — there are good candidates who want exactly that, and misleading the ones who want modelling costs you both a hire and a reputation.

Requiring a planning tool as essential. Anaplan or Pigment familiarity is learnable in weeks; modelling judgement is not. Specifying it as essential narrows a competitive pool for little benefit.

Silence on study support. At part-qualified level this is frequently the deciding factor between two offers, and omitting it from the advert loses candidates before they apply.

No mention of who they support. “Business partnering” without naming the areas is meaningless, and analysts read it as filler.

And under-describing the data reality. If the analyst will be extracting from three systems and reconciling manually, say so. Someone who enjoys that will take it; someone who expects clean data will resent it.

Testing for the right analyst

Four tests, and the first is worth more than the other three combined. Give them a real problem and twenty minutes — an anonymised set of management accounts, and the question “what would you want to know first?” Analysts investigate; producers summarise, and the difference shows immediately. Ask them to describe a model they built: structure, assumptions, what happened when something changed. Ask what drives profitability in a business like yours — expect a hypothesis, not generalities. And ask about a piece of analysis nobody asked for; the curiosity that distinguishes this discipline shows up as unprompted work. Our FP&A interview questions guide covers the fuller sequence.

Where the role leads

FP&A Analyst is one of the better career starting positions in finance, and the routes from it are wide: to FP&A Manager and eventually Head of FP&A; sideways into business partnering and commercial finance; or into financial control for those who want the breadth. Saying so in the advert matters, because at this level candidates are choosing a direction as much as a job. Our FBP versus FP&A versus FC guide maps the three-way choice and the career paths hub the wider picture.

A Note from Our Founder — Adrian Lawrence FCA

The FP&A Analyst hire is one where the specification does more work than the interview, because the candidates who make good analysts self-select on the description. Write a role about maintaining the forecast file and you will get people who maintain things. Write one that says “we want to understand why our margin moved two points last quarter and nobody currently has time to find out”, and the people who apply are the ones who find that question interesting — which is the entire quality you are hiring for. Be honest about the production element too. Every analyst role has one, and pretending otherwise just moves the disappointment from the advert to month three.
