VAT Manager Recruitment

Accountancy Capital places VAT Managers, Senior VAT Managers and Heads of VAT at £65,000 and above for in-house indirect tax functions across the UK. The in-house VAT Manager manages the business’s VAT compliance obligations, provides routine indirect tax advisory on business activities and transactions, manages the HMRC VAT relationship and, in larger tax functions, leads a team of VAT and indirect tax professionals.

This is the primary VAT Manager recruitment page for Accountancy Capital’s indirect tax placement service. For the VAT Director-level service, see VAT Director Recruitment. For the full in-house tax hub, see Tax Recruitment hub. To brief a VAT Manager search, call 0204 553 8893.

What an In-House VAT Manager Does

VAT return preparation and filing. The VAT Manager prepares and files the UK VAT return — typically quarterly — ensuring the input tax reclaimed and the output tax declared are accurate, that the partial exemption calculation (if applicable) is correctly performed and that the return is filed within the Making Tax Digital (MTD) requirements. For larger businesses with complex partial exemption or significant cross-border VAT, the VAT return preparation is a material exercise requiring specific technical expertise.

VAT advisory on transactions. The VAT Manager advises on the VAT treatment of new transactions, new products, new customer arrangements and new supplier agreements — providing the VAT analysis that ensures the business charges, reclaims and accounts for VAT correctly before a transaction is committed to rather than after a costly error has been made.

HMRC VAT compliance management. The VAT Manager manages the business’s HMRC VAT relationship — responding to HMRC queries and information requests, managing VAT compliance checks and VAT inspections, and negotiating the resolution of any compliance issues that arise. The VAT Manager who has managed a HMRC VAT inspection from the in-house side — who knows how to respond to inspection officer requests efficiently, which supporting documentation to provide and how to manage the inspection process to the most favourable outcome — is providing a materially more valuable service than the one who has not.

Partial exemption management. Businesses with a mix of taxable and exempt supplies — financial services, healthcare, education, property businesses — apply the partial exemption method to restrict the input tax they can reclaim. The VAT Manager calculates the partial exemption percentage, applies the de minimis test and, where applicable, manages the business’s Partial Exemption Special Method (PESM). See VAT Director Recruitment for the PESM negotiation specialist role.

VAT reporting and governance. The VAT Manager provides periodic reporting to the Finance Director or CFO on the VAT position — the VAT compliance position, the input tax recovery rate, any open HMRC matters — and manages the VAT-related disclosures in the annual report. In larger businesses with a dedicated Head of Tax above the VAT function, the VAT Manager reports to the Head of Tax.

VAT Manager Qualifications

The in-house VAT Manager role at £65,000 and above typically requires CTA qualification with an indirect tax specialism — developed through the VAT or indirect tax team of a Big Four, Top 10 or specialist indirect tax advisory firm. The ATT qualification combined with significant in-house or practice VAT experience is also common at VAT Manager level, particularly at businesses where the VAT compliance is not highly complex and where the advisory requirement does not demand the full CTA technical depth.

The specific areas of technical depth that most distinguish strong VAT Manager candidates: partial exemption experience (including PESM management where applicable); Making Tax Digital VAT compliance experience; cross-border VAT knowledge (EU VAT registration and OSS/IOSS returns for businesses supplying EU customers; import VAT and customs duty management for goods importers); and HMRC VAT compliance check and inspection management experience.

VAT Manager: Making Tax Digital and Digital Reporting

Making Tax Digital for VAT — which has required all VAT-registered businesses above the £90,000 registration threshold to keep digital records and submit VAT returns through MTD-compatible software since April 2019 (mandatorily; April 2022 for the wider VAT population) — has become a baseline requirement for all in-house VAT Managers. The VAT Manager who manages the business’s MTD compliance — ensuring the digital links between the accounting system and the VAT return are maintained, that any spreadsheet-based adjustments are performed through approved digital links and that the MTD audit trail is complete — is performing a compliance function that has become non-negotiable for all businesses above the VAT registration threshold.

The planned extension of MTD to Income Tax Self Assessment (MTDITSA) for businesses and landlords with income above £50,000 (from April 2026) and above £30,000 (from April 2027) will increase the VAT Manager’s digital reporting responsibilities in businesses where the VAT Manager also supports personal tax compliance. Accountancy Capital assesses MTD compliance experience as a standard element of all VAT Manager candidate assessments.

Practice to In-House: VAT Manager Transition

Most in-house VAT Managers have trained in the VAT or indirect tax team of a Big Four, Top 10 or specialist indirect tax practice, typically making the in-house transition at three to six years of post-CTA experience. The practice VAT adviser who has managed the complete VAT compliance and advisory cycle for a portfolio of business clients — from VAT return review through to HMRC inspection management — is the strongest profile for an in-house appointment. See Moving from Practice to In-House Finance and Tax Recruitment hub.

A Note from Our Founder — Adrian Lawrence FCA

The VAT Manager is the qualified tax professional whose compliance errors are the most immediately visible — because a VAT return error creates a HMRC penalty notice that arrives within weeks, not the delayed discovery of a corporation tax error that may not surface until the next annual audit. The VAT Manager who gets it right consistently — whose returns are accurate, whose partial exemption calculation is defensible and whose HMRC relationship is managed professionally — is providing an invisible but essential compliance function that the business should not underestimate.

Accountancy Capital places VAT Managers with CTA qualification, partial exemption experience and HMRC inspection management capability. Call 0204 553 8893 to brief a VAT Manager search. See VAT Director Recruitment for the Director-level service and Tax Recruitment hub for all in-house tax roles.

VAT Manager: EU VAT and Cross-Border Indirect Tax

UK businesses that supply goods or services to EU customers, or that hold EU VAT registrations for business conducted in EU member states, face an ongoing EU VAT compliance requirement that sits alongside the UK VAT compliance obligation. Since the UK’s departure from the EU VAT system (effective 1 January 2021), UK businesses can no longer benefit from EU VAT simplifications such as call-off stock and triangulation, and must manage their EU VAT registrations independently rather than through a single EU VAT return. The in-house VAT Manager who manages the group’s EU VAT registrations — who coordinates with local EU advisers in each member state, manages the local VAT return filings and OSS/IOSS registrations for digital services and distance sales, and monitors EU VAT regulatory changes that affect the business — is providing a cross-border indirect tax function that is increasingly important to UK businesses with EU operations.

Accountancy Capital assesses EU VAT and cross-border indirect tax experience as a specific interview dimension for VAT Manager briefs at businesses with EU operations or EU customer bases. Specify the EU VAT footprint (countries of registration, approximate annual EU VAT liability) when briefing a VAT Manager search. Call 0204 553 8893.

VAT Manager: Financial Services and Partial Exemption

Financial services businesses — banks, insurers, investment managers, payment processors and fintech companies — face the most complex VAT compliance environment of any sector in the UK, primarily because financial services are generally exempt from UK VAT. This means the financial services VAT Manager does not manage the straightforward input tax/output tax balance of a fully taxable business but instead manages the partial exemption calculation — the process of identifying which input tax the business can recover, which is blocked by the exempt activities, and which falls within the de minimis limits.

The Partial Exemption Special Method (PESM) that most large financial services businesses operate — an alternative partial exemption method agreed with HMRC that better reflects the actual use of inputs in making taxable and exempt supplies — is a complex and ongoing management responsibility. The VAT Manager who manages a PESM at a financial services business is performing one of the most technically demanding VAT compliance functions in the UK market. Accountancy Capital assesses PESM and financial services partial exemption experience specifically in all VAT Manager briefs at financial services businesses. Call 0204 553 8893 to brief a financial services VAT Manager search. See VAT Director Recruitment for the PESM negotiation specialist role and FCA Compliance Recruitment for broader financial services compliance roles.
