This page provides a complete Finance Business Partner job description template for 2026, alongside the key differences from the Management Accountant and FP&A Manager roles, 2026 salary benchmarks and the interview approach that identifies genuinely strong FBP candidates. The Finance Business Partner role is one of the most commercially demanding and most frequently misspecified qualified finance roles — the JD matters significantly in determining whether the right candidates apply.

Finance Business Partner Job Description — 2026 Template
Role title: Finance Business Partner | Reports to: Head of Finance, Financial Controller or Finance Director | Partners with: [Commercial Director / Sales Director / Operations Director] | Salary: £60,000–£100,000 | Updated: June 2026
Role Overview
The Finance Business Partner provides financial intelligence, commercial analysis and financial challenge to the [business unit / commercial / operations] function. Embedded in or closely aligned with the operational team, the FBP translates financial data into commercial insight that improves business decisions — influencing decisions before they are made rather than reporting on results after they have happened. The FBP is the primary finance interface for the operational leadership team and the source of financial credibility that grounds commercial ambition in financial reality.
Key Responsibilities
Commercial financial analysis. Build and maintain the financial models that support commercial decisions in the partnered business unit: pricing models showing margin impact at different volume and mix scenarios; investment cases with ROI analysis and payback periods; channel or customer profitability analysis; and scenario analysis supporting strategic decisions.
Business unit budget and forecast. Own the annual budget and rolling reforecast for the partnered business unit. Work with operational managers to build a financial plan that is grounded in commercial reality, challenge assumptions that are not financially defensible and maintain the rolling forecast to reflect the most current view of business unit performance.
Financial reporting for the business unit. Produce the monthly financial reporting pack for the partnered business unit including: P&L versus budget and prior year; KPI dashboard aligned to the operational team’s performance measures; bridge analysis from prior month, prior year and budget; and written commentary that explains the commercial drivers of the financial results in terms the operational team understands.
Decision support. Attend operational leadership team meetings and commercial reviews as the finance representative. Provide financial input to decisions as they are being made — flagging financial risks and opportunities in real time rather than reporting on them retrospectively.
Financial challenge. Challenge commercial decisions and assumptions that are not supported by sound financial analysis. The FBP who identifies that the proposed pricing will compress margin below the target threshold before the decision is made — and who presents an alternative that meets the commercial objective within the financial parameters — is performing the highest-value function of the role.
Strategic project support. Provide financial modelling and analysis for strategic projects affecting the partnered business unit: market entry analysis, make-or-buy decisions, acquisition pre-assessment and pricing strategy reviews.
Process improvement. Identify and drive improvements to the financial reporting and planning processes for the partnered business unit, including better data quality, faster reporting cycles and more insightful KPI design.
Qualifications and Experience Required
Qualification: ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualification. CIMA is particularly well-suited to the FBP role given its commercial accounting and management reporting focus; ACA and ACCA-qualified candidates are also common in FBP roles, particularly at businesses where the statutory reporting and audit management depth of the ACA/ACCA qualification adds value to the commercial finance analysis.
Experience: Two to six years of post-qualification experience in a commercial finance, business partnering or FP&A role. Specific experience of building and presenting financial models to commercial or operational stakeholders. Direct evidence of influencing commercial decisions through financial analysis — not just reporting on them.
Technical skills: Advanced Excel financial modelling — three-statement integrated models, scenario analysis, sensitivity tables. Ideally experience with a financial planning tool (Anaplan, Pigment, Adaptive Insights, Vena or equivalent). Power BI or equivalent BI tool experience increasingly valued for management reporting visualisation.
Interpersonal skills: The ability to influence operational managers and commercial leaders who are not in the FBP’s reporting line and who may resist financial challenge. Strong written and verbal communication; the ability to summarise complex financial analysis in two or three sentences for a commercial audience with limited financial background.

Interviewing Finance Business Partner Candidates
The FBP interview question that most consistently differentiates genuinely strong candidates from technically proficient but commercially limited ones is: “Tell me about a commercial decision that was different because of your financial analysis.” The strong FBP candidate describes a specific situation, a specific financial model or analysis they built, the commercial challenge they made and the decision that changed as a result. The technically strong but commercially limited candidate describes the models they built without being able to articulate the commercial outcome their analysis influenced.
The second most revealing question is: “Tell me about a time you challenged a commercial decision that the business was committed to making.” This tests the FBP’s willingness to use their financial analysis to challenge decisions that are going the wrong way — the most commercially important FBP capability and the hardest to develop without the right combination of technical credibility and personal confidence.

A Note from Our Founder — Adrian Lawrence FCA
The Finance Business Partner job description is the one I most frequently see miswritten — and the miswriting consistently produces the wrong candidates. The most common problem: the JD lists both the management accounts preparation responsibilities of the Management Accountant and the commercial analysis responsibilities of the Finance Business Partner, as though one professional can do both simultaneously at the standard that each requires. They cannot.
A Finance Business Partner who is also expected to own the month-end close is a Finance Business Partner who is spending sixty to seventy percent of their time doing the close and thirty to forty percent of their time doing business partnering. That ratio is the inverse of what the role should look like — and the business is getting Management Accountant output on a Finance Business Partner budget. The right design is to separate the close management (owned by the Management Accountant or Finance Manager) from the commercial analysis and decision support (owned by the FBP), and to ensure each professional has the time and the mandate to perform their primary function to the standard it requires. See What Is a Finance Business Partner? for the full role definition.

Finance Business Partner Job Description: Sector Variations
FBP in a Retail or Consumer Business
The retail FBP typically partners with the buying, trading or category management team and focuses on product, range or store profitability analysis. The specific skills valued are: category P&L management; promotional ROI analysis; open-to-buy budget management; like-for-like sales and margin variance analysis. The retail commercial calendar — weekly trading reviews, buying cycle milestones, promotional planning cycles — creates a more intense rhythm of financial analysis and decision support than most other sectors. Salary: £62,000–£90,000 in London.
FBP in a Technology or SaaS Business
The technology FBP typically partners with the product, sales or customer success function and focuses on unit economics — customer acquisition cost, lifetime value, churn rate and ARR bridge analysis — alongside the commercial P&L. The SaaS FBP needs familiarity with subscription revenue models (MRR/ARR recognition), cohort analysis and the specific metrics that VC and PE investors use to assess SaaS business performance. Equity participation through EMI options is common at growth-stage technology businesses. Salary: £65,000–£100,000 in London.
FBP in a PE-Backed Business
The PE-backed FBP works in a more demanding analytical environment — faster reporting cycles, more detailed investor KPI requirements and frequent support for commercial decisions that the PE fund is actively monitoring. The PE-backed FBP also typically contributes to acquisition modelling and integration financial analysis where the business is part of a buy-and-build strategy. Salary: £68,000–£105,000 in London for an experienced FBP at a PE-backed business. See Finance Career in a PE-Backed Business.

Finance Business Partner JD: Writing Tips for 2026
Be specific about the partnering relationship. ‘Partners with the commercial team’ is too vague. ‘Primary finance partner to the Sales Director and two Regional Sales Managers, attending the weekly commercial review and the monthly trading meeting’ tells the candidate specifically how embedded the role is and with whom they will work. This specificity attracts candidates who are looking for genuine embedded partnering rather than advisory-at-a-distance business finance roles.
Include the size of the P&L the FBP will oversee. An FBP who is partnering with a £45m turnover division has meaningfully different modelling requirements from one partnering with a £5m brand. Stating the P&L size helps candidates self-select appropriately.
State explicitly that the FBP does not own the close. The most commercially oriented FBP candidates — those who are specifically looking for a role where analysis and decision support are the primary function — will pass on a role that appears to include close process responsibility alongside the commercial work. If the FBP genuinely does not own the close, state this explicitly: ‘The month-end close is managed by the Finance Manager. The FBP’s primary accountability is forward-looking financial analysis and commercial decision support.’
